Report

Chirnside Colts headed away to Gala Hotspur looking to build on their good start to the season, but were brought down to earth with a bump. When the game started it seemed the Colts hadn’t got off the bus as Hotspur were first to every ball. Slow to react to every situation during the first 15 minutes Hotspurs were pressing the Colts deep into their own half. A ball cleared from the box wasn’t closed down quick enough and the strike deflected into the bottom corner off the net.

Surely this would shake the Colts into action? No they continued to meander through the game in the first half until late on in the half Lough and Ethan Pollock down the left forged an opening for Crombie who blazed over the bar. This was shortly followed by Ethan Pollock setting Crombie through again. He rounded the keeper and shot towards goal, but an out stretched arm from the defender blocked the shot. But the Colts were left bemused as the referee waved play on!

Hotspur took that decision as a boost as they once again ploughed forward carving out several half chances leading into the break which couldn’t come quick enough for Colts.

The second half begun with a difference, the Colts were on the pitch! Lough and Daniel Pattenden danced past the Hotspur defence to flash balls across the front of the Hotspur goal, both of which Lackenby was unfortunate not to get on the end of. Golden opportunities were then squandered by first Crombie pulling his shot well wide and Jordan Wood who’s shot slid past the far post. Yet another penalty appeal for an obvious hand ball was turned away for the Colts.

But the wind was knocked out the sails of the Colts when against the run of play the Hotspur winger spooned a cross looping over the helpless Lugget in goal. A corner shortly after was headed in unmarked by the Hotspur striker to make it 3-0. Daniel Pattenden scored a scorching 20 yard strike after skipping 2 challenges, but his goal meant nothing as Hotspurs central midfielder scored a 25 yard screamer not 1 minute later.

The young colts had their heads down when there was no real need and this resulted in a sloppy 5th goal being conceded from a simple ‘route one’ long ball. Even 5-1 down the Colts made enough chances in the last 10 minutes to salvage something from the game as Jordan Wood and Brandon Pollock had efforts against the post and side netting. Blacklock then did get a second goal for the Colts with a 30 yard effort curling and dipping into the top corner of the net. Leaving the final score at a disappointing 5-2 which could have been very different had chances been taken and decisions made the other way.
